This postcard shows an image that was taken in Nima, Ghana in 2014. It shows two young girls sitting in front of their grandmothers outside their shared home. I took this image as part of a project I did with Plan International, during which I researched and documented the lives of five young women in Nima in order to compare them to my own life, with hopes of educating myself and those around me about what I found. The project and particularly this image has become one of my favourites, as I learnt so much from the experience and the people I met, and I had the opportunity to witness the fact poverty didn’t destroy their desire to become successful. This is also the reason that I chose to support the Black Careers Women’s Network with 10% of the profits from the sales of this postcard. You can find out more about them on their website, but especially as a young black woman myself, I know how important it is that the potential that we have is encouraged and developed with tools and resources such as those which are offered by this charity. Would you like to see more images from this project? Please have a look at my Nima portfolio.
